<p> Tibet’s holy Mt. Kailash is sacred to three religions, and pilgrims from all over the world travel to this remote Himalayan mountain to circumambulate, offer prayers, and receive blessings. But travelers to Mt Kailash trek should be aware of a hidden danger—recently, an elderly couple from Singapore died during their Mt. Kailash trekking tour as a result of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>AMS, also called altitude sickness, is caused by rapid exposure to low air pressure, triggered by ascending from a lower elevation to a higher elevation very quickly. The change in air pressure makes less oxygen available to the lungs. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The average altitude in Tibet is 4,000 meters, and AMS can occur within hours after a person ascends to an altitude of 3,000 meters or more. For most tourists this is as simple as getting off the plane in Lhasa, which has an elevation of about 3,500 meters. Clinics are available in Lhasa, but in remote destinations like Mt. Kailash it’s important for travelers to take precautions and communicate with their Tibet travel agency and guides ahead of time about this potential danger.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>AMS can be prevented and treated safely if travelers and tour guides act responsibly. Explore Tibet, a Lhasa-based travel agency, has some guidelines for preparing for and dealing with AMS.&#13;<br />
</p>
<p> &#13;<br />
     Know the symptoms of AMS. They include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, shortness of breath, lack of strength and appetite, sleeping problems, nosebleed, peripheral edema (swelling in legs and ankles) and oliguria (dehydration and kidney problems). Although rare, if left unchecked AMS can progress to potentially life-threatening pulmonary or cerebral edema. In addition to AMS, dehydration occurs more quickly at higher altitudes, exacerbating the affects of altitude sickness.&#13;<br />
     Take it easy. AMS is easy to treat and prevent. Most people will experience only a headache or feel “fluish” their first few days at higher elevation. Visitors are advised to rest, drink plenty of water, remember to take deep breaths and refrain from strenuous activity. If these simpler treatments are not enough to alleviate AMS, hospitals and clinics in Lhasa are equipped with oxygen and other first-aid remedies.&#13;<br />
     Trek safely. When climbing to higher altitudes, for example when trekking, visitors should make sure to keep their schedules slow, giving their bodies enough time to acclimatize. If symptoms of AMS become debilitating, it is important to quickly descend to a lower elevation.&#13;<br />
     Travel with a responsible team. Guides should know the symptoms of AMS and be able to respond immediately. Tour vehicles outside of Lhasa should carry supplemental oxygen. All Tibet tours should be paced to provide time for acclimatization.&#13;<br />
     Know the risks. Visitors with a severe cold, a high fever, acute or chronic pulmonary disease, severe cardiovascular disease, pregnant women in their third trimester, and children under three should avoid traveling to regions with a high altitude.&#13;<br />

<p>Investing Early in Young Children with Autism&#13;<br />
<br />Since Easter Seal’s Living with Autism Study was released in late 2008, CVS Caremark has responded to the needs of families living with autism by providing nearly $  650,000 in grants from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust to train and certify Easter Seals therapists in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), enhancing further Easter Seals’ capacity to respond to the need for evidence-based interventions for young children with autism.  </p>

<p>Through this funding, nearly 100 Easter Seals therapists at 20 Easter Seals affiliates nationwide have been trained and certified in these critical interventions.  To date, more than 500 young children with autism have benefited from ABA therapies with the promise of continued impact in the lives of thousands more young children with autism in years to come.</p>

<p>Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis unveiled the fall prevention campaign during a speech late last month on Workers Memorial Day – an event that commemorates people who lost their lives on the job, according to an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) news release.</p>

<p>Several organizations are behind the effort, including OSHA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR).</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The fall prevention campaign is focusing on residential and other smaller construction sites, where safety measures are often less prevalent and projects are frequently completed before OSHA has a chance to inspect the site. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Harrell said many Charleston-area construction sites may fall into this category as South Carolina’s Lowcountry region continues to see steady growth in new businesses and homes.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction is emphasizing three key messages in its effort to reduce injuries and deaths from falls at construction sites:&#13;<br />
</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
     Contractors and workers can plan together, before every job, to work safely at heights.&#13;</p>
<p>     Contractors must provide the right equipment for working at heights, and workers need to use that equipment.&#13;</p>
<p>     Contractors and workers need to be trained to use the equipment and to work safely.
<p>Harrell, the Charleston workplace injury lawyer, said his practice has time and again shown him the tragic results of falls at construction sites and other workplaces in Charleston, Myrtle Beach and elsewhere around the state. </p>

<p> The success of last week’s Belize tourism expo is one more indication that the growth of the Belizean travel and tourism industry is on the right track, the owner of Belize’s premier eco lodge said today.</p>

<p>Lucy Fleming, who along with her husband Mick own The Lodge at Chaa Creek, regarded as a pioneer in the Belize tourism industry, said that the quality of offerings at this year’s BETEX, the Belize Tourism Expo, highlighted the fact that the Belize tourism is moving in the right direction.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>BETEX is a biannual tourism industry trade show organized by the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) and attracts industry professionals as well as travel agents and writers from around the world. According to BTIA President Jim Scott, this year was the biggest in the event’s history, with over 350 attendees at Belize’s Princess Hotel.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Mr. Scott said that due to the country’s small size and other unique attributes, promoting Belize in-country was more effective than attending larger trade shows overseas. “Where better can you promote your culture and your destination than at home? They get to learn about Belize, about our culture, about our natural resources, things to do while they are here… the hotels, tour operators, sites, restaurants, smells and so many good things. Things that you have pride in as a Belizean.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Given this year’s tourism figures, it seems that Belize’s marketing efforts are getting results.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Belize’s Minster for Tourism, Hon. Manuel Heredia, said that while last year set a record for Belizean tourism, 2012 is already showing even better figures, with this year’s first quarter showing an increase of over 8% in tourist arrivals compared to last year, with record 32,000-plus overnight visitors last March.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Ms Fleming said that while interest in Belize’s Maya history and culture has increased due to the global media and internet attention on the so called Maya 2012 prophesies, she is confident that Belize vacations will continue to become more popular in coming years.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Where else can you go from pristine rainforest studded with majestic Maya temples and remnants of ancient cities to unspoiled Caribbean islands and beaches in just a few hour driving? We’re just a short hop from the US, have a very friendly, English speaking population, a wealth of stunning natural beauty and a wide range of activities to enjoy it. The 2010 TransRep study found that 34% had had difficulties accessing suitable treatment in the UK (due to the so-called ‘postcode lottery’), 37% had had previous treatment failure and 28% wanted a better quality of care. 26% of those who took part in the survey also cited a wish for an anonymous donation as part of their decision. Other factors often mentioned included a lack of donor gametes in the UK; the cost of UK treatment and better success rates overseas. </p>

<br />Suzana Stankovic is an artist, entrepreneur, producer, teacher and leader. She is a formally trained actress and dancer and an independent dance-theater artist with a voice of her own. She has created, produced and performed her own material on many of New York City&#8217;s finest stages to widespread praise.</p>

<p>A driven woman with a clear vision and the courage and leadership to carry it out, Suzana Stankovic is making a statement both as an artist and with her larger message of self-determination.</p>

<p>Among her credits, &#8216;Backstage&#8217; took notice of Suzana in 2009 and invited her to write personal essays from her life as an artist. Writing enabled her to share her message in a new way, which resulted in subsequent talks and workshops. </p>

<p>Suzana Stankovic is also the founder and director of The Stankovic Ballet Company, Inc., a non-profit arts organization she founded in 2003, currently expanding its mission and programming to include guidance and support for self-producing artists in every discipline. The company&#8217;s new name and identity will be unveiled in the near future.</p>
